Hot Link Protection Can Break Images over HTTPS

Summary

HTTPS is configured correctly when resources that are available via HTTP are also available via HTTPS.

Using hot link protection on a website could trigger 404 errors for website images.

Symptoms

Browse to an HTTPS version of a web page. Then browse to an HTTPS version of the same web page and notice that the images are missing.

When inspected with a tool like Firebug or Developer Tools, the images will report 404 errors.

Error Message(s)

404 errors on all locally hosted images.
